Weepy is a dragon with an important mission: he must protect his castle. In J.J. Hebert’s Weepy the Dragon, the castle is under threat from an invading army. Weepy must overcome his fear of failure and come to the castle’s aid. But can he overcome his memories of the past when he was younger and smaller? Can he rise to the occasion and protect those he cares about and the castle he calls home? The castle is being threatened, and so is Weepy. There are bullies all around him. While he knows he must use force to protect the castle, he also knows that he can’t turn himself into a bully like those who threaten him. Weepy faces expectations that are challenging, and he must have the courage to overcome his fears and fight the good fight.

J.J. Hebert’s Weepy the Dragon: Standing Tall is told with gentle assertions on how one can be strong without being aggressive and a bully. The language is simple to help early chapter book readers improve their reading skills. Dialogue is used effectively, helping to move the plot forward, and descriptions are used well. This is a heartwarming story with a very lovable key character: Weepy. The author stresses the importance of being strong in the positive sense, to assert one’s character and be true to oneself, and rejoice in the differences that define who we are. This is a fun, endearing story for young readers and will help them become the caring, courageous adults they should be.
