What Do You Feed A Bat? by Lee Porter is an amazing book about bats. This story follows a little girl who wants to invite a bat for breakfast, brunch, or even dinner. However, being kind-hearted, she wants to make sure she selects the right food for her bat friend. She first wonders about typical American dishes. I love the illustrations by Katelyn Heinlein. They are cute and beautifully colored. I particularly like the pinks and blues, which illuminate the pages. The bat drawings are perfect for a children's book about such a unique species. This is a wonderful and clever way of sharing information about food and bats.
What Do You Feed A Bat? by Lee Porter includes themes such as bravery, open-heartedness, altruism, and readiness to welcome the unknown. It is engaging and entertaining and shares a wealth of knowledge on various topics such as eating in the United States, tea room traditions, theaters serving food, and world cuisines like sushi, pasta, and Mexican food. The story behind the book’s creation is moving: the author encountered bats, and her two grandchildren helped her research and illustrate the story. (Austin conducted the research, and Katelyn created the illustrations. Congratulations to both of them!) Thank you for the fascinating bat facts and for shedding light on these lovely animals, who unfortunately still suffer from a bad reputation. However, this perception may change if this book reaches many young readers. The protagonist is compassionate and lovable, making it irresistible not to share her story with grandchildren or children! So what are we waiting for?
