What Lies Below by Mark Lukens is a real page-turner. The main character is Pam. She is a single mother and terrorized by nightmares of her past. It is a past bereft of a mother's love. Her therapist is sure that her subconscious mind is attempting to relay a message, but Pam does not understand the so-called dreams. All she knows it that they are terrifying and are becoming more frequent. A gold key consistently appears in them. She is certain it is pivotal in solving the reason for the nightmares. Her father was a renowned psychiatrist but is now dying. He has a special relationship with her daughter Sarah. They have secrets: secrets that Sarah refuses to share with her mother.
Other characters in this short story include a strange man who watches Pam from the woods on her father’s property. A housekeeper who is reticent to explain her fears, and a nurse with far too much control within the household. Top these with a supposed ghostly apparition and the mix becomes very intriguing indeed. It is critical that Pam determines the cause of her nightly horrors. She needs to find the golden key which could explain much of what is happening to her. Mind games are being played and the perpetrator is surprising. Are you ready for a roller-coaster read? If so let the countdown begin.
I loved this book. Great presentation, plot and characters. The story and the characters are nicely woven together in a tale that holds your interest right from page one to the end of the book. I found it very entertaining and would definitely recommend it. There is no profanity or sexual content. A good thriller for any age.
