What Will I Be Today? This question activates Sailor’s superpower every day. Sailor is a young girl who lives a pretty normal life. She goes to school, watches TV, reads books, picks her nose, and plays with her toys. But when she is in her yard, she becomes whatever she chooses to be and does whatever her imagination desires. On Monday, she flies her toys to Timbuktu and almost crashes the plane. On Tuesday, she attends a royal feast where she eats so much that she has to roll down a hill. On Wednesday, she charges against a scary beast. On Thursday, she becomes a pop star performing a catchy little ditty. Then, on Friday, she takes her friend through a portal, and together they travel back ten thousand years! In What Will I Be Today? Carly Major celebrates the greatest superpower children possess: their limitless imaginations.
What Will I Be Today? by Carly Major is an adventurous and insightful picture book. Each day unfolded into a humorous adventure, complete with near-disasters and last-minute saves. The story is simple yet engaging, with impressive end rhymes, colorful fonts, and gorgeous graphic illustrations. Olena Kyrychenko's illustrations were one of my favorite things about this book. The bright colors, expressive characters, and lively scenes made Sailor's adventures feel even more magical. I was also impressed with this book’s vocabulary, as I learned two words: ditty and moat. Carly Major’s depiction of the wonder of childhood imagination spurred me to reflect on how to apply my imagination to my adult realities, because I've learned that “It’s our imagination that makes all these things seem new…” I thoroughly enjoyed this book and happily recommend it to children who love adventure, make-believe, and stories that celebrate the power of imagination.
