When a Phoenix Rose Nevermore is the second book in the Cycles of the Phoenix series by C.A. Nicholas. This standalone book is an anthology featuring interconnected stories, poems, and comedy sketches. Dahlia Noelle has battled with anxiety and depression for most of her twenty-three years. After she loses her job as a writer at a comic book company, Dahlia's life increasingly spirals out of control. She fantasizes about her crush, Lance Corinth, who is in a relationship with another woman, and finds herself haunted by a deep melancholy she is unable to shake off. As a shocking chain of events unfolds, Dahlia barely manages to survive. Years later, she meets someone with whom she starts a family. However, her melancholy never truly goes away.

Author C.A. Nicholas does a masterful job of highlighting how depression and anxiety change the course of a person's life. When a Phoenix Rose Nevermore is for readers of short stories, poetry, and anyone who loves experimental narratives. You never know what to expect from the next chapter in this book. In one of the short stories, the moon invades Earth while a grown yet sheltered man finds comfort in Santa's lap. Nicholas' writing has a distinct lyrical flair that adds beauty and depth to the narratives. Dahlia's story is the one common thread that runs throughout the book. She is a complex and layered character who is easy to like and sympathize with. Overall, it's a fantastic anthology. If you're a short story reader and looking for something offbeat, this is the book for you.

When a Phoenix Rose Nevermore by C.A. Nicholas is a collection of interconnected stories that offers profound insights into life's challenges. The book follows Dahlia Noelle, a woman grappling with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Her experiences of self-isolation and paranoia, rooted in childhood trauma, led her to a dark place, especially after facing rejection. However, she discovers hope and healing when she joins a support group for authors, where she unexpectedly finds love. The book also features a humorous, action-packed narrative about Bob, a man with the code name Uranus, who battles against the moon. The collection includes thought-provoking prose that explores the true meanings of beauty, depression, religion, sex, and gender. Additionally, there are whimsical scenes, such as a man hoping to enter heaven and Dahlia crossing the road, entering musicals, and conversing with ghosts.

When a Phoenix Rose Nevermore is the second book in the Cycles of the Phoenix Saga by C.A. Nicholas. It takes readers on an emotional journey, showing the process of overcoming mental health struggles and demonstrating resilience in the face of despair. The book expertly balances dark realism with moments of humor, hope, and artistic expression, emphasizing that despite life's inevitable sorrows, every day is worth living because of our inherent worthiness and capacity for love. Nicholas's poetic prose is filled with symbolism and heartfelt reflections. The narration is unpredictable, often breaking the fourth wall to engage directly with the reader, which makes for a captivating read. The compelling message reminds us that even in times of deep suffering, human beings are inherently beautiful and deserving of compassion. This makes the book an essential read for those seeking catharsis and comfort. It addresses sensitive issues such as suicide, depression, trauma, and mental health, encouraging mindfulness, authenticity, and a continual path toward healing.

In When a Phoenix Rose Nevermore: Cycles of the Phoenix II (Gold Edition) by C.A. Nicholas, Dahlia Noelle confessed to her therapist with a comforting lie. Dahlia claimed that her friends often reached out to check on her, though in truth, she faced her struggles alone. Having battled suicidal thoughts before, Dahlia fought tirelessly to resist their pull. She longed for connection, unaware that her subconscious tried to ease her nerves by always forcing a small smile. As Dahlia’s grip on reality began to waver, she habitually turned inward, blaming herself for every misstep, subjecting herself to psychological torment, even as she admired the beauty in others’ humanity. Dahlia carried her sadness throughout her life, yet she also discovered how to embrace moments of happiness within the shadows of her sorrow. The story reminds us that joy and depression can coexist, and while some days are heavy, others can hold unexpected light.

When a Phoenix Rose Nevermore by C.A. Nicholas is a deeply moving and emotionally charged book. It explores the difficult realities of trauma, depression, and resilience, all portrayed with sensitivity and care. The engaging writing style made me part of Dahlia’s journey, making her struggles feel both personal and profound. While the story does not shy away from darkness, it is balanced with hopeful and uplifting moments, offering a sense of light amidst the pain. Each chapter highlights Dahlia’s battles—both within herself and in the world around her. Dahlia’s authenticity and relatability make her courage to rise from brokenness even more powerful. The book is beautifully crafted, thought-provoking, and goes beyond the mythical imagery of the phoenix to reflect the cycles we endure in our own lives. It leaves a lasting impact well beyond the final page and stands out as an unforgettable must-read.

When a Phoenix Rose Nevermore: Cycles of the Phoenix II by C.A. Nicholas is a collection of stories with multiple characters whose experiences, to a certain extent, intersect across time and space. Dahlia Noelle revisits childhood events with her parents, addresses psychological crises, and the consequences of past trauma while forming and breaking relationships. Bob Tom leaves home, joins the military, and engages in operations on the Moon, encountering opposition from civilians and extraterrestrial groups. In another, the experience of death and the entering of a metaphysical realm unfold, followed by vignettes that lean into responses to grief, loss, and threats to well-being. Through these and more, the outcomes of events and all they touch shape the paths of the characters and the network of connections.

Phoenix Rose Nevermore: Cycles of the Phoenix II by C.A. Nicholas is a fantastically imaginative read that takes a little bit of time to get a rhythm for, but once I understood how the sequencing really worked between the books and parts, it was full steam ahead. My favorite is the fourth, particularly due to Nicholas's ability to pull me through fantastical desert chases on cinematically colored cheetahs, and on to quiet, touching moments of family closeness, almost within a shared breath. I love Yuri Hara and Kaya, and the generosity and wisdom their place within the story's context brings, and how we see Aora Faust’s interventions in the Timeless Artist’s realm provide guidance and hope. Every chapter within every book is just brilliant, and with tight writing made more impressive by the economy of word count, this is an anthology series that will delight speculative fiction fans. Very highly recommended.
