Jimmy has a sudden heart attack and wakes to find himself in the presence of Norm. Norm is an elder angel and his job is to guide Jimmy through an introduction to heaven and explain his new role of angel. Jimmy is confused, surprised, bored, excited and trying hard to do his best to succeed at his assignment. Jimmy must now watch over Maura all of the time and help her through the good and bad times in her relationship with Bob, Jimmy’s brother. Jimmy is taken down to earth by his sister, a higher ranking angel, and then left to begin watch over Maura. When Jimmy returns to heaven and complains of being bored, he learns that he can join a poker game, but this is like no game he has played on earth. The rest of the story I will leave for you to enjoy as you read When Angels Play Poker by Maura O'Leary.
When Angels Play Poker is a bit on the whimsical side, thought-provoking, with some wishful thinking. I really found myself thinking about all of the possibilities that this book suggested and hoped that it might be true. The chance of having a deceased loved one watching over me or the opportunity to watch over someone left behind when I die is rather intriguing. Maura O'Leary has written an inspirational and entertaining story and I highly recommend When Angels Play Poker for all believers and non-believers in God. It is not offensive, there is no heavy religion nor is there unnecessary sex, violence or disrespect anywhere in the story. I believe that this is a book worth reading and I highly recommend it to all readers.
