In When Dreams Abound: A Return to Chambers Lane, book two of the Chambers Lane Series, the author gives readers a look back at Daniel’s early years, his struggles as the middle child of five, and his desperate need for a father figure as his own walked out when he was very young. Several men in his life, including his older brother Jose Luis Jnr, Mr Lucas, his teacher, and his Uncle Louie, could possibly fill that void. He also has grand ambitions academically, something his siblings don’t share. Does he find what he’s looking for and achieve his dreams, or is he forever trapped in his past? You’ll need to read When Dreams Abound to find out.

In proving his range, Daniel Maldonado’s The Chambers Lane series has a different writing style from the Daniel Mendoza series. They’re not as action-packed and edge-of-your-seat exciting. Instead, they’re familial, thought-provoking, and sometimes heartbreaking. The younger Daniel is a lovable character. I especially loved Chapter 5, where his motivations for high expectations of himself shine through in a touching scene when he’s opening up to Mrs Campbell, his high school principal. And I defy any reader not to shed a tear by the end of Chapter 10. There’s one more book in the series, which I’m looking forward to reading. The Daniel Mendoza series fans will appreciate When Dreams Abound’s backstory the most, but it also stands alone as a family saga.
