When Fred the Snake and Friends Learn the Chinese Zodiac, and the Great Race is a children's picture book by Peter B. Cotton. Fred the Snake and his two friends, Perdy and Jack, run into two Chinese students at their school. Soon, they became friends with Ellie and her brother, Connor. Ellie and Connor tell their new friends about the Chinese calendar and how it was formed. During the reign of the Jade Emperor, he ordered all the nearby animals to get ready for the Great Race. The Great Race will lead to the Heavenly Gate. One by one, the animals, including the cat, the rat, the dragon, the horse, and many more, finished the race. And the Chinese zodiac was formed according to each animal's position in the race.
When Fred the Snake and Friends Learn the Chinese Zodiac, and the Great Race is a fun-filled children's adventure. I think it will not only entertain kids but also teach them about the Chinese calendar and its historical significance. Author Peter B. Cotton has crafted a delightful rhyming narrative that young ones can read aloud and even create their own melodies. Fred and his friends are a joyful bunch. I liked how quickly Fred, Perdy, and Jack became friends with Ellie and Connor. Among the animals, each has a distinctive personality that really comes alive through Cotton's narrative and Bonnie Lemaire's colorful illustrations. It's a quick read, but I loved every moment of it. I'm sure young readers will enjoy the book even more. Highly recommended.
