Growth is a constant in all life. Human beings experience growth—physical, mental, emotional, spiritual—depending on the area of their lives. The most evident growth in life is physical growth. From the time a child is born, he or she begins to experience growth until adulthood. Antwinette Scott understands this and decided to explain it to young readers in her book titled When I Was. This book explains to children, through pictures, the major characteristics that mark each year as they grow older. It also uses figures of speech and similes to compare the ages of children to the unique features of animals, thereby giving young readers information about different animals and their characteristics.
The first thing anyone will notice when reading When I Was is the colorful illustrations. These illustrations are specifically designed to explain and teach young readers between the ages of 0 and 5 to know and identify colors, plants, animals, and objects. It also helps to enhance their imaginative abilities. When I Was contains a poem that can be recited and taught to young listeners. I love the fact that this book not only serves as a source of entertainment for young readers but also shapes and prepares their minds for what to expect as they grow older. Children can also learn how to spell the words contained in the text. Parents and school teachers will find When I Was very helpful to their children and classes. Kudos to Antwinette Scott for this beautiful work of art.
