Peter Van Oossanen’s When Mercy Died introduces Sam Stanton, who is an extraterrestrial raised on Earth. Sam is plunged into despair after his fiancée, Michelle Bennett, and her family are killed in revenge for his dismantling of the Scorpion cartel. He experiences grief and retreats to an isolated cabin, where he starves himself and attempts suicide. Then his biological father rescues him and brings him to Safrourblo, an advanced world. Sam’s sister, Odlen, helps him heal, and he decides to return to Earth and hunt down those who took everything from him. He discovers a great ally in LAPD detective Leona Martin and uncovers a dangerous criminal conspiracy headed by people in high places in the government. Sam’s mission is fraught with danger, but can he complete his revenge and also find a new purpose and love?
When Mercy Died is a thrilling urban fantasy that I enjoyed. Sam is depicted as a powerful extraterrestrial, capable of becoming invisible, and who moves at speeds that are hard to register. He is deeply flawed and believable, often needing the help of others. He falls in love, and grief makes him even more lovable as a character. The writing is excellent, and the use of strong imagery, like the depiction of Sam at his most vulnerable moment, gaunt and suicidal, was arresting. The dialogue sparkles on every page and intensifies the drama. There is a dichotomy between the inner brokenness of this character and his physical prowess. Peter Van Oossanen demonstrates a unique skill for character development. This fast-paced, cleverly plotted thriller is a perfect tale of revenge and the fight against crime and corruption. An absolute winner!
