When Squirrels Fly by D. E. Carr follows Allie Caldwell and her allies as they track down her missing aunt, Mel Caldwell, who has discovered a functioning wormhole while testing virtual reality goggles designed by Dr. Camille Jackson. When Allie arrives at Mel’s disrupted home in Ann Arbor, she discovers Mel’s notes on quantum entanglement, optics, wormholes, and Mel's dog Chidi, but no Mel. Teaming up with neighbor George Bennet, Allie reconstructs Mel’s experiments and confirms the portal’s existence, experiencing dangerous travel through it herself. Alongside allies, they face repeated threats, surveillance drones, and the fact that the wormhole technology has attracted powerful interest due to its potential scientific and commercial value. Impostors and escalating danger complicate their efforts to track Mel, as they race against time to protect both Mel and her groundbreaking technology.
D. E. Carr’s When Squirrels Fly offers a unique storyline with wonderful characters and a few really great twists. We get to see the other side of the wormhole through the eyes and descriptions of different characters, the craziest being Allie vanishing and reappearing miles away, and Nick making a startling discovery that changes the entire course of the case on his own journey through. I loved the conspiratorial aspects, especially the records of travelers long gone, glaring instances of knowledge withheld, and a dodgy phone call that George makes, which further exacerbates Allie's distrust of him. Carr's writing style is easy to follow, clean and well executed, avoiding lengthy jargon and explanations of how things work, instead allowing the story itself to do the heavy lifting. Overall, this is a fabulous mystery with plenty of room to stretch its legs. Very highly recommended.
