Written and illustrated by Allie Compeau, Where Do Pirates Poop? is an energetic, deeply silly discovery of pirates’ bathroom logistics. The narrative opens with a boy’s unfiltered curiosity about the practical, unglamorous bathroom situation of the pirates: “Where do pirates poop?” From there, he starts searching every corner of the pirate ship. He looks at the pirate’s hat, the treasure chests, and the cannons. Then, after a careful check, he figures out the real purpose of each item or place he stumbled upon. He concludes it is impossible to have a bowel movement there and moves on to the next. Until he finally tracks down the actual place. Can you guess where it can be?
Allie Compeau’s writing is lean and punchy. Every spread contains a short setup and a hilarious punchline. It has a goofiness that builds page after page. The book’s snappy cadence makes it an exceptional tool for educators looking to reinvigorate a stagnant classroom environment and recapture the wandering minds of the young readers. At the same time, the author pairs this humorous story with illustrations that do some comedic heavy lifting. The bold outlines, flat bright colors, and exaggerated expressions give extra visual punch that mirrors the text. His background choice completes the scene—not too overpowering nor too distracting. Where Do Pirates Poop? is a storybook that would be great for a wide audience, such as classrooms and libraries.
