Although it is only August, it's never too early to start thinking about the scariest and tricksiest holiday of the year, Halloween, and what better way to do so than reading a ghoulish book with youngsters like Whisker Watchers by Jaybie D. Written for ages 3-5, the book is designed as an introduction to the popular holiday and features some silly ghosts who think they can steal the fun of Halloween. However, these ghosts didn’t count on “a secret society of purr-tectors who prowl the night” – kitties who guard their neighborhoods and their kiddos. This whimsical crew will do whatever it takes to keep everyone safe, using what all cats use; watchful waiting and oh-so-silent stealth.
Jaybie D. knows her readers. Designed as a picture book, Whisker Watchers pops with colorful images, clever rhymes, and simple rhythms. Though I didn’t read it sitting in an armchair with a little one on my lap, I could easily imagine doing so. In truth, I lingered over the images and read the rhymes aloud. I especially liked how each page held my interest. Some featured a large black cat with pumpkin-orange eyes looking back at me or a homey image of a basement filled with washing machines and tools and playful “purr-tectors.” Other pages asked me to take a closer look at trick-or-treaters in costume, goofy monsters in hiding, or cute kitties lying in wait, creating an interactive element to the book that I am certain would even delight those far younger than I. Whisker Watchers is simply a charming book for all ages.
