Who Made This Mess? is a picture book by Dayna Ault with illustrations by Jose Nieto. Three children live in a house with their mom. One day as she goes from one room to another, she finds messes everywhere such as a trash can and a planter knocked over and the trash, soil, and plant scattered on the floor. When she asks her children who made the mess, no one will confess. When Mom sees dirty paw prints all over the kitchen, she realizes that their family dog is the culprit. She threatens to give the dog away, but the children plead with her to keep their beloved pet and promise to help clean up any mess it makes. Mom agrees that it can stay.
In Who Made This Mess?, Dayna Ault gives us a story about the importance of patience and listening. A home with kids and pets is sure to be stressful at times. I like how the kids come to their pet’s defense and logically point out the benefits of pet ownership. I enjoyed how their angry mom is won over by the dog’s cuteness and sweetness as well as the pledge of the older kids to care for their pet better. The story is told in a lilting rhyme that small children will enjoy. The full-color illustrations that accompany the text are delightful, capturing the emotions of the characters. This is a fun story, and Ault’s letter to parents about listening is a good reminder to us all.
