Devin Kornelsen’s The Pillars of Unity presents a New Age spiritual philosophy built around Unity, described as the origin of creation and the Divine heart to which all things return. Kornelsen defines the pillars as thirteen energetic laws that can be applied to ordinary life, beginning with the person’s sense of Self and moving toward wisdom as a lived spiritual practice. The book treats the soul as something healed through alignment with its own truth, then places that healing inside a larger universe governed by Natural Law. Its purpose is not doctrine, but a way of seeing human conduct as part of creation’s movement toward fullness. Written for spiritual seekers who like metaphysical systems with practical meaning, The Pillars of Unity asks readers to see daily life as a sacred expression of Oneness.
Devin Kornelsen’s The Pillars of Unity is first-rate New Age non-fiction, and Kornelsen is excellent at turning a spiritual system into something a reader can return to piece by piece. The writing style is what I'd call conversationally academic, and while there are places that require a re-read to understand, it does all come together easily afterward. Kornelsen's Selfhood material is my favorite, and I love that the “Little Selves” give the often neglected inner-child healing a real place inside the larger work. Also noteworthy is Kornelsen's work on Wisdom, where he explains that a healer must become the spirit of healing before they are able to effectively fulfill that role. Why? Because wisdom has to feel lived in, as opposed to simply being understood. The Pillars of Unity is not a light read, but it is a worthy one, full of deep spiritual foundations that convey some big ideas. Well written and thoughtful, readers who enjoy New Age philosophy will adore this.
