Whoo! Hoo! Hoo! The Carousel at the Zoo, written by Kathleen Welton and illustrated by Tamara Joubert, takes young readers on a lively carousel ride through a zoo, where different animals add to the joyful experience. As the carousel spins, various animals create unique sounds and movements: piggies squeal with "Whoo! Hoo! Hoo!" while horses gallop and neigh and elephants stomp and sway. Each group of animals contributes to the rhythm of the carousel as lights shimmer and the poles go up and down. The accompanying zoo animals, like monkeys, penguins, and lions, cheer along, clap in time, and playfully join in with each carousel turn. Peg invites her friends to enjoy the carousel with her as flags wave, music chimes, and an eagle swoops by. When the carousel slows, Peg eagerly suggests another joyful ride.
Whoo! Hoo! Hoo! The Carousel at the Zoo by Kathleen Welton is a delightful read-aloud that captures the rhythm and joy of a zoo carousel adventure. Set to the tune of The Wheels on the Bus, the rhythmic text invites children to sing along, creating an interactive experience. Each page introduces new animal friends on the carousel in a way so that young readers may anticipate each verse and engage with the fun, repetitive structure. Joubert’s illustrations are truly exceptional, featuring a soft, detailed color palette that gives the images a unique textured quality, making each scene come to life. Together, the tale and the beautifully crafted artwork make this book a great choice for storytime. Very highly recommended.
