Readers meet a determined little chameleon in the children’s picture book Why Did the Chameleon Cross the Road? by Cathy Kreutter with illustrations by Andrew Jackson Obol. He faces the daunting task of crossing a busy road before he misses something. The chameleon looks at his destination, a tree, and devises a clever plan to get there. He reminds himself to take small, careful steps one at a time and to look both ways before crossing. Along the way, he encounters many obstacles, but he trudges on and says to himself that he can do it. The final pages share fun facts about chameleons and Uganda’s environment. The mix of storytelling and real-world chameleon facts makes this book both educational and engaging. Why did he cross the road? Was it simply to get to the other side, or was there another reason? Will he make it across in time?
Why Did the Chameleon Cross the Road? by Cathy Kreutter is playful, but serious in its own way, and I enjoyed reading it. From an educator’s perspective, I thought the affirmation of "I can do it" throughout was an excellent way to inspire kids to keep trying until they succeed (like the adage: if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again). I appreciated the checklist that showed the little creature’s progress with crossing the road, as well. It gives a visual for children to see how much farther he needs to go to complete his objective. I also think it encourages them to set goals and strive to achieve them. In a classroom, activities such as drawing or coloring a chameleon, creating a prediction chart on whether students think he will succeed, or discussing something they would like to accomplish could extend the message. The story reinforces the lesson that courage, determination, and focus can help us complete even the most challenging tasks.
