Wippy the Wizard and the New Color is a children's picture book written and illustrated by William Lapenta. Wippy's wife is celebrating her birthday today, and her husband, Wippy the Wizard, wants to give her something that's very special. He decides not to give her something that he would buy, but to make it himself. After a lot of thinking and pacing, Wippy decides that he will create a new color in her honor. His grandson, Garrett, watches as Wippy goes to work. Color creation is a hard job, even for a wizard, but Wippy finally succeeds or does he? Garrett looks and tells his grandfather that the color he's made is blue, and he points out that there are lots of blue things already. Wippy is not discouraged, however, and he figures out some more ingredients to put into his big pot.

William Lapenta's children's picture book, Wippy the Wizard and the New Color, is an entertaining and imaginative story that introduces young children to color theory. Wippy's efforts to make a new and original color, while unsuccessful, are fun and may inspire kids to try making their own color combinations with their crayons and paints. The illustrations in this picture book are marvelous -- they're bold and brightly colored, and each panel fits the story perfectly. Wippy the Wizard and the New Color is a great story-time book that teaches as it entertains. Each panel is filled with animals, plants and color - making materials to share and explore. It's also a great primer for young readers. Wippy the Wizard and the New Color is recommended.
