Wolves Among Us: Biblical Principles to Identify and Expose Spiritual Predators by Linda Reyburn Shirey is a practical guideline that offers biblical support to churchgoers. Using the metaphors to emphasize the difference between the innocent churchgoer and the manipulative deceiver, Linda shares her knowledge and her experiences with these types. Be it a priest, pastor, or youth leader, everyone is capable of donning a mask and putting on a façade. They work hard at hiding it, but with proper discernment, it is easy to identify the wolves, just like the Apostle Paul did. Linda gives a beautiful symbolic representation of Jesus’ crucifixion, and highlights the importance of using what she calls your defensive tools against the predators. Love is one of them. Linda also emphasizes the importance of having patience; it is, after all, a virtue. Linda also makes wonderful examples of revered characters such as Moses, Hannah, Sarah, and Abraham, and what their unwavering faith did for them.
I was sincerely touched by Linda Reyburn Shirey’s ACTS acronym; it is not only extremely helpful but easy to remember. Yes, prayer should involve a mixture of Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. Wolves Among Us is the guide every Christian needs. I loved the familiarity that Linda brought by mentioning beloved biblical characters and the reminder that none of them had it easy, but that they fought the good fight and prevailed, regardless. Paul’s dedication to the Lord spoke volumes, as did his letters and nonstop missionary work. And his faith paid off. We cannot fight our battles alone, but have to trust in our God as did Gideon, Joshua, and those before them. Linda put a lot of thought and effort into this book, and it is a testimony to her wondrous faith.
