Words That Keep Us Together by Dr. Richard Rein asks what happens to a loving relationship when words between two people begin doing damage neither intended. A passing remark can send a simple disagreement somewhere neither partner expected, leaving both unsure how the conversation traveled so far from where it began. The book follows those moments from the first signs of discord to the point where couples begin finding their way back to one another, showing how phrasing can alter what happens next. Betrayal brings the same questions into harder territory before the discussion moves toward rebuilding intimacy in a relationship both people still want to preserve. Exercises at the close of each chapter invite readers to examine their own patterns and practice different responses when a familiar exchange begins to go wrong.
Dr. Richard Rein’s Words That Keep Us Together is a fantastic relationship guide, and useful for couples who want advice that fits everyday life. The writing is direct and easy to follow, and I love how the author places each lesson inside exchanges readers can recognize. Tom and Ally are a perfect example, with Tom recasting his question about her hair to explain how beautiful she looked with it up and why he wanted a photograph of the evening. I also liked the example involving Paul and Theresa, who choose her dog’s name as a discreet cue when sarcasm slips into a gathering. Decades of professional experience clearly went into this book, with extensive research informing the information at every turn. Well-written and helpful, readers looking to communicate better will adore this.
