Working Boats: Ferry by Tom Crestodina invites young readers aboard a car ferry for a day. The crew boards before dawn, passengers arrive in the morning, and by night, the boat rests quietly at its dock beneath the stars. Using a continuous cross-section illustration, the book opens the hull like a dollhouse. It shows every level of the ship at once. The young reader can see the captain steering in the wheelhouse, the engines humming below the waterline, and vehicles rolling on and off the deck at every stop. Along the way, an orca pod leaps beside the hull, expanding the view beneath the boat. A rescue boat waits just in case. The passengers wave goodbye to the city skyline as the island comes into view. Is your child wondering how a massive ferry works, or perhaps what incredible cargo it can carry? This book answers their questions.
This is an excellent book by Tom Crestodina. Clarity is the book’s superpower. The writing never overexplains. The words are short and rhythmic lines pull a young reader forward, leaving the heavy lifting to the illustrations. The pacing is light and the read-aloud friendly. The artwork itself is rewarding. A fancy red sports car, a dog trotting up the stairs, and the massive ship engines usually restricted to passengers are some small details that turn a ferry boat journey into a real world. The layered cross-section format, letting children absorb spatial and mechanical concepts through pure observation, is magical. Working Boats: Ferry is a great choice for a toddler who loves look-and-find type of games and a slightly older kid who is curious about how things actually work. For parents, grandparents, and educators, it is a must-have if you’re raising future engineers.
