Xalien Goes to the Zoo is an educational tale from the Xalien the Alien children’s book series, written by Michelle Path and illustrated by Charlotte Roberts. Excited to be going to the zoo, Sarah opens her closet to find something to wear, but finds a surprise. She calls to her brother and sister, Adam and Jessica, to come and see what (or rather, who) she’d found – their old friend Xalien the Alien! Xalien and the three children all venture to the zoo together, where they see monkeys, lions, elephants and more, before buying souvenirs at the end of the day. At home, the tired children fall asleep - the perfect time for Xalien to return home with new fond memories of her human friends.
I found Xalien Goes to the Zoo to be very much a fun read. Not only does Michelle Path create a story of excitement in an outdoor adventure, but she also introduces a true foreigner to our animal kingdom. It is fun to watch the small alien interact with some of the animals at the zoo, and quite hilarious when they all go to buy ice cream later on during the visit. This story brought back wonderful memories of the first time I visited another country and saw their unusual animals, while immersing myself in the new and odd customs there. Reading about Xalien’s fun adventures in a new place brought a very wide and happy smile to my face. I most definitely recommend Xalien Goes to the Zoo to all young readers aged 5-12 years of age, not only so that they might enjoy a delightful story, but also so that they are able to gain an understanding of and new respect for the vast and beautiful animal kingdom on our planet.
