There was an era when dinner was served at the same time every day, on a table with a cloth and almost formally set. Everyone was expected to be there – on time, every day. Catherine Ring Saliba’s book, Ya Gotta Eat!, is a testament to that era and the importance of sitting down with family for a good meal. Even breakfast was important, as it was the beginning of a day full of big events, like exams, meetings, or a big game. Food was of the essence; if you had to eat, you may as well consider eating well. And, with each item on the menu, there had to be a story, sometimes a rather humorous story worth sharing and remembering. After all, stories get better over time, and so does the food.
Catherine Ring Saliba’s book, Ya Gotta Eat! A Collection of Family Recipes and Stories, is a mouth-watering treasure. The author is a real storyteller in her presentation of family recipes that have honored her table for decades. From a special Christmas lasagna with its unique sauce flavored by lamb bone to coconut cream eggs and many other comfort foods, the book is well organized, with each recipe including photos, stories, and a vivid description of both the process and the finished product. The photographs add a personal touch; not the standard picture-perfect finished product one expects in a pristine cookbook, but rather how it might possibly look in real life, sometimes overflowing and overdone. There’s always a story to go along with that, too. This is a great collection of family photos, stories, and recipes, a real treasure to add to a cookbook collection.
