J.R.R. Tolkien’s quote, “Not all those who wander are lost,” really captures the heart of A Wrong Turn Right by Karen Lopez. It opens with an exhausted Dr. Preston McClendon heading home from his wealthy fiancée’s family event. Things take a sudden twist when his car breaks down on a remote wooded road. He leaves it behind to seek help and begins walking through the woods, where he meets Wendellia (“Wende”). She’s a guarded young woman from a nomadic clan and doesn’t know or understand modern conveniences like cars or phones. As they navigate the strange “traveler’s moon” in search of Wende’s missing brother, Egan, he starts to think he may have slipped into another time. Perhaps his wrong turn might hold a purpose he never imagined.

As I was reading A Wrong Turn Right by Karen Lopez, the phrase “Everything happens for a reason” kept popping into my head. I felt very connected to Preston’s tug-of-war between his obligation to stay with Wende and his pull to return to his time and his responsibilities at the hospital. I could also relate to her fierce loyalty to her brother and her way of life. The writing moves easily between tense scenes and quieter, reflective moments. It also has a gentle spiritual thread that doesn’t feel forced. It seemed more like watching two people learn to listen better—to God, to themselves, and to each other. Readers who enjoy heartfelt, slow-developing relationships, family bonds, or faith in everyday choices will appreciate this tale. This is the kind of book that could be turned into a great movie. I enjoyed sinking into it on a cozy evening, and it left me thinking about the “wrong turns” in my own life that might’ve actually been nudges in the right direction. I loved this book.

A Wrong Turn Right by Karen Lopez is a beautiful, spiritual love story with the added twist of time travel. Preston McClendon is a young resident doctor returning from his engagement party late at night to report for his early shift at the hospital. His car suddenly stops for no reason. Searching for some cell reception to call for help, he wanders into the woods, where he inexplicably finds himself transported back in time by the “travelers’ moon”. There he meets Wendellia, a knife-wielding beauty whose gypsy caravan has broken down. She is awaiting her brother’s return from the nearby village with the part required to fix their broken wheel. Despite the less-than-gracious welcome, Preston slowly comes to love and understand Wende and her brother Egan. He reluctantly accepts that somehow he has traveled to a period where life was simple, conditions were extreme, and survival was difficult. Uncertain that he can ever find his way back to his world, he decides to ingratiate himself with this band of early wanderers.

A Wrong Turn Right is exactly what we need to read at this time of modernity, stress, and tension. Karen Lopez has created a wonderful, eclectic group of characters who override cultural and period attitudes to prove how all that really matters is love, family, and spirituality. This is not primarily a Christian book; it is much more a spiritual romance and an incredibly sweet and powerful love story at that. I loved Preston as a character, as he learned that although he was in a different time, that didn’t change the basic human precepts of morality and common decency. The gentleness of the story and the slow but inexorable love story that developed kept me riveted. I love a good romance, and this story has it all, including the wonderful serendipities that occurred. If you like your romances spiced up with a time-travel twist, then this is absolutely the book for you. This book will give you time out and inspiration to keep on pushing for what you truly want. It is a wonderful reminder that kindness, love, and family should be at the core of our humanity rather than anger, prejudice, and hatred. I finished this book with a satisfied sigh of contentment and renewal. I am sure other readers will also. I loved this story and highly recommend it.

A Wrong Turn Right by Karen Lopez is a romance adventure novel with a clever time travel twist. The story follows a young man from today’s time period named Preston who accidentally goes back a full century in time. He stumbles upon a beautiful young woman named Wende who is part of a nomadic family that lives in the forest. Although Preston and Wende are at odds at first, neither fully trusting the other, they eventually form a friendship. Wende’s family and friends, however, are not as quick to adopt the strange man into their community. The longer Preston remains in Wende's time period, the more trouble he causes.

I found A Wrong Turn Right to be a charming and engaging read. It’s a very compelling romance because Preston and Wende come from such differing backgrounds, and yet in time, an attraction forms between them that neither one expected. I also enjoyed the adventure element of the story that comes from the rough and dangerous world in which Preston is trapped. I’m a big fan of time travel stories, so having that added to the mix was like icing on the cake for me. The author has done a great job of writing strong characters that are easy to connect with. The plot is interesting and includes several cool twists that kept me guessing about what would happen next. I highly recommend A Wrong Turn Right by Karen Lopez for fans of love stories between two people who overcome great difficulties to be together.
