You Always Kill the One You Love is a psychological thriller by James Dain. Daniel Adamik (Dan) always thought that he and his wife, Sandra, were soul mates. That is, until he found Sandra had been cheating on him with her boss, Mark Hill, and in retaliation, he shot both of them dead. Fearing persecution from law enforcement, Dan tries to frame Sandra's and Mark's murders as a case of a robbery gone wrong. He visits his sister and her family, only for them to realize that Dan must have something to do with Sandra's death. Seeing no other option, Dan flees to his uncle's former cabin in the woods, and along the way, picks up a girl named Babe who looks very much like Sandra. Additionally, Babe has no memories of her past.

You Always Kill the One You Love is a riveting crime noir thriller that keeps your eyes glued to the pages all the way through. You don't want to miss a single moment of this book. Gritty, twisted, and shocking, the narrative never lets up, as you're always wondering what's real, delving into the psyche of a narrator whose reliability may be more questionable than it first appears. Author James Dain has crafted a mind-bending puzzle of a tale that keeps its secrets hidden until the very last few pages. Among the characters, the protagonist is obviously the true scene stealer. Dan is a fascinating narrator, someone you may not like but can't help find compelling. The epilogue really took me by surprise. All in all, it's a gem of a book for fans of psychological thrillers.
