In You Always Kill the One You Love by James Dain, Dan wakes up from a haunting nightmare in which he shot his wife, Sandra, and her lover, Mark. Convinced that Mark had deceived Sandra into loving him, Dan believes he has cleansed her and that she is finally at peace. Driving along Interstate I-79, Dan meets a woman named Babe, who looks exactly like Sandra. Dan thinks his grief is playing tricks on him because, since losing Sandra, his mind has been fragile. Babe seems to soothe Dan, making him calmer and less anxious. Babe tells Dan that a man named Mark had drugged her, leaving her with no memory of what happened. Dan decides to take her to a remote cabin he knows is unoccupied. As they spend time together, Dan begins to feel as though Sandra has somehow returned to him. In Dan’s mind, their bond is eternal—soulmates, forever tangled in love and fate.

You Always Kill the One You Love by James Dain offers clarity, insight, and a haunting exploration of the dark side of love. The writing is captivating, presenting a shockingly original take on love and obsession. Dan’s inner dialogue and his conversations with Sandra and Babe feel realistic, drawing genuine empathy from me. The plot is suspenseful from start to finish. I was completely absorbed and kept turning the pages as fast as I could. The characters are vivid and believable, with Dan standing out as particularly fascinating. His unpredictability kept me on edge, eager to see what he would do next and where life would take him. The story was brilliantly written and exposes the raw, consuming nature of love at its most dangerous and extreme.
