Your Hair is Magic: Bed Head is a children’s picture book written by Jessica Forman Norwood and illustrated by Desiree R. Bolden. Avery Gray knows one thing for certain -- when she wakes up in the morning, her hair will be “wild and crazy and everywhere.” She’s grown accustomed to the fact that her hair is a blend of all different types of hair. Some hairs are super curly while others are nearly straight. Sometimes, she’ll even discover the perfect corkscrew curl hiding in her wild mass of hair. And you know what? She loves her crazy hair and appreciates how each curl is unique and not quite the same as any other curl on her head. And she knows how to make her hair look exactly how she wants it.
Jessica Forman Norwood’s Your Hair is Magic: Bed Head features a little girl who actually loves her hair, something many never really learn to do. Far too many of us have curly hair and want perfectly straight locks, and others with straight, long, and shiny hair want curls. No one seems content with their own hair -- except Avery. And I think she’s got the right idea. Her hair is gorgeous, even straight out of bed, and it’s hers. Artist Desiree R. Bolden gives us such a grand perspective on Avery’s hair, complete with all its quirks and oddities, and she makes Avery seem so real. I especially enjoyed the panel showing Avery traveling in a convertible to get her special Bed Head look. Your Hair is Magic: Bed Head is a marvelous book that should get kids giving their own bed head looks a second glance and hopefully appreciating what they see. It’s most highly recommended.
