You're Joking: Become an Expert Joke-Teller by Tom E. Moffatt is a 186-page book for kids on how to tell jokes. This book piqued my interest because it didn’t look like a book that simply told jokes to kids. It actually teaches them how to begin telling jokes, how to improve upon them, and acts as a step-by-step guide of encouragement. The author has experience in this area and relates that to his lessons. The structure of the book is set up with practical topics and exercises to go with them. It doesn’t just leave you in the dark wondering what to do next. Examples of topical jokes are plentiful so the reader will be able to understand the context of each topic. Numerous illustrations help keep the book lighthearted and fun.
If you or anyone you know is interested in telling stories with a fun twist, this book is for you (or them!). Whether a beginner or expert joke-teller, this book will provide helpful guidance—and it may even be adults who benefit from this more than kids. The book also lays the foundation for those exploring careers in stand-up comedy, or other comedy venues, allowing the reader hands-on experience, starting with the exercises that get you out there telling jokes. I also appreciate the areas to reflect, and how the book emphasizes clean and appropriate jokes no matter the audience. You're Joking: Become an Expert Joke-Teller by Tom E. Moffatt is a clear winner in the art of joke-telling.
