There’s something about being dragged through a forest by rotting flesh that will have even the toughest traveler whimpering in fear. A daughter’s nightmare merges into reality, and transplant surgery leaves a blue-eyed patient seeing the world through a darker lens. I liked that You’ve Been Warned: Scary Stories Off the Beaten Path isn’t overtly grotesque but has an eerie tone that urges your mind to wander into darker territory. This book will have you thinking twice about venturing down a forbidden trail or accepting that fatal dare. Eric Kernish delivers intrigue through well-thought-out plots and unpredictable endings. Some tales were sad, and some bittersweet, but whether the characters deserved what they got is a matter for the reader to decide. The illustrations by the author were eerie and sinister, playing on readers’ fears. Vanity and ego can be as much of a downfall as falling into a well-laid trap. If you’re looking for stories told with chilling precision, then You’ve Been Warned is the book for you.
