Zareen’s Pakistani Kitchen by Zareen Khan and Umair Khan is a beautifully illustrated cookbook, and also a memoir, travelogue, and celebration of a culture of love and nurturing. Full of nostalgic tributes to childhood, Karachi, Lahore, aunts and grandmothers, it promises and delivers a rich treat of memories, colors, spices, and very practical how-tos. The recipes are organized in an easy-to-find format, with sections on snacks, breakfast, meat, chicken, fish, vegetables, beverages, and sweets. The choice of dishes includes top favorites from the authors’ renowned Zareen’s restaurants in California, homemade dishes, and street foods. Recipes are coded Easy, Intermediate, or Advanced for easier decision-making, and there is a helpful section on the desi (ie, South Asian) pantry with tips on substitutions, shopping, cooking techniques, and menu planning.
