The True End of Money and The Path To Free by Mr Derek M. McGowan II explores the role of money and capitalism across various eras, and through the eyes of characters ranging from a spineless playboy, an immigrant determined to improve the prospects of his family, a boy genius, a senator, and an entrepreneur who learns an important lesson about worth and consequences. It demonstrates how money can turn resources and innovations into weapons. The story begins with the advent of fusion power ringing in an age of cheap energy, but instead of this becoming freely available to all, the technology is hoarded, deepening the divide between the have's and have not's on the political playing fields. Time after time, the struggle of greed vs altruism continues like a horrible repeat pattern that favors some and victimizes others.
One could say that the true villain of this story is not a person, but a concept. Money. Like the proverbial little devil often seen in cartoons, it tempts from the sidelines and manipulates the odds against its opponents, while fueling its champions with god-like power. The thought-provoking theme of the story, which is explored through various facets and viewpoints, is very relevant to our time and may serve as a wake-up call to readers. The glimpses into possible futures proved fascinating and absorbing and each character came across as authentic and well-realized. For me, one of the great attractions of science fiction is exploring how societies and people change and transform themselves over time and this story does contain a rich diversity of developments that speak volumes for what makes the human race tick. Ultimately, the book leaves you with an intriguing question: is humanity ready for a world without money.
