In The Ember Stone by Shari Marshall, Kori Ember does not want anything to do with the less-than-normal things that are part of her heritage. Kori travels the world with her lottery winnings, determined to ignore her magical abilities, though she cannot fully escape them. Kori’s attempt at normalcy is abruptly disrupted when her friend Fin calls her home with troubling news. Alivia, Kori’s younger sister, is missing. Once back, Kori finds herself hunted by the dangerous Society of the Blood Wind. As a member of the Ember family, she has one of the strongest magical bloodlines and a rare resistance the Society desperately seeks to control. Kori will be hunted until either she or the Ember Stone is captured. Forced into action, Kori must rely on both her former police training and her emerging magical powers to survive.
The Ember Stone by Shari Marshall had me hooked from start to finish. The story was fast-paced and held my attention throughout. There was so much happening that I could not turn the pages fast enough. It was a whirlwind of fantasy, magic, and suspense, and I had a hard time trying to guess what would happen next. The characters are realistic and relatable. Kori must learn to accept her magic and to use it against the Society of the Blood Wind. The writing style was engaging and made magic appear realistic. The book was brilliantly written, and I had a hard time putting it down. The ending was absolutely perfect, and I could not have wished for a better conclusion. I enjoyed reading the book, and it will stay with me for a while.
