The Gentleman is a horror novel written by Natasha Powell. It's set in the South in the early 1980s. James Greene is on the run from The Gentleman, a demon whose presence is known by the scent of rotting lilac, and who's had James do his bidding for way too long. James was presented with a Hobson's choice: watch his young daughter die at the hands of The Gentleman or do his bidding, and James, of course, had to do the latter. It's been a year since James last saw his tormentor and he's heading for the Florida Keys in the truck his dad gave him years before. The onslaught of a ferocious storm makes him finally give in to exhaustion and check into a gloomy motel, thinking it best to wait the storm out a bit before continuing on his journey.

Natasha Powell's historical horror novel The Gentleman is an awesome read. It's an absolute triumph that visits the jungles of Vietnam, the deep South during the 1850s, and a house of horrors where James encounters other souls ensnared by The Gentleman. Each one of them had a story that captured my imagination and made me shake my head a bit to remember that The Gentleman is primarily James' story -- and what a story it is! The Gentleman is filled with horrors and gruesome nightmarish images, history, and battles between good and evil. It also reads as a non-stop action and adventure literary thriller as James learns who he indeed is capable of being and doing. The Gentleman is fabulous and ranks very high on the list of my favorite books for 2014.
