Author Biography

As a child who loved to read and as a lifelong storyteller, I have always appreciated the power of story. Many of Xandra’s (mis)adventures in my book 3 G B* are based upon events in my own life; she is the eighth grader I wish I had been.
I have taught from the preschool level to the college level and have published several educational articles, a book on readers’ theatre, and a book on helping children write. 3 G B* is my first young adult novel.

3GB: Good Girl Gone Bad by K.A. Black is a coming of age tale about a teen named Alexandra, called Xandra by her family and friends. She seethes with resentment against her older brother, Brent, the local all-star athlete and the center of attention. Her younger brother is exceptionally gifted and has the typical angst that goes along with being different. Along with her family issues, Xandra also deals with school mean girls. Xandra is dealing with her feelings and, when it seems that she has everything figured out, things irrevocably change. A visit to the neighborhood abandoned (haunted?) mansion unleashes a chain of events that change the lives of Xandra, younger brother Simon, and her friend Lenore. In a moment of panic and fear for her family, she takes the blame for something that she didn't do. Xandra is sad and angry that everyone so readily accepts her guilt.

K.A. Black's story, 3GB: Good Girl Gone Bad, is cleverly written and maintains the reader's interest. The reader sees the internal struggle that Xandra faces as she comes to terms with the decisions she's made and how she grows to be strong enough to stand up for herself, even if the truth can hurt someone she cares about. K.A. Black effectively captures the myriad of emotions that a teen goes through, from bullying to resentment, to fear and love. I enjoyed reading this book and would like to see sequels from Simon's perspective as he grows up!
