Hop Fight by S. Pluck, P. MacCruiskeen, and F. T. Marquardt is an outlandish, absurdist fiction guide masquerading as an official sports rulebook. The authors detail a high-contact, equipment-free sport in which opponents must stand on a single chosen foot and use brute force to knock each other off balance. Matches are fought in two sanctioned styles, Bump-Style or Hands-Style, across locations ranging from pubs to living rooms. The book maps out an entire subculture around this unipedal sport, including strict safety regulations, historical ties to global mythology, and unique pre- and post-game traditions. It also provides an in-depth statistical framework of hoptermetrics and the bitter organizational rivalry dividing the sport (yup, it’s that intense!). Ultimately, this mock manual positions its sport as a hilariously bizarre meditation on modern balance and humility in an unstable world.
What makes this spoofed version of a sports guide so engaging is how smoothly it pairs deadpan bureaucratic instructions with sheer madness, like outlawing the use of leaf blowers and itching powder under penalty of suspension. The breakdown of fantasy league formats, particularly the Alternative H-League—which should be judged by a librarian for aesthetic poise—shows lots of creative depth. Also, the inclusion of ancient mythological precedents and the heartwarming tradition of the post-match winner giving the loser a foot bath bring an unexpected layer of warmth to the comedy. It’s a wonderfully strange read that will have you laughing at the complexity of this fictional athletic world. I highly recommend reading Hop Fight by S. Pluck, P. MacCruiskeen, and F. T. Marquardt if you appreciate clever humor that flawlessly mimics real-world sports administration.
