In Christen Ballard’s Threshold of Darkness, schoolteacher Naomi Potter lives in a house built by her boyfriend, William Rhineheart, when an ornate attic door draws him into a mysterious blackness. His disappearance brings the police to her home, where the investigation takes a baffling turn. Photographs have lost his likeness, while official records offer no proof that he existed. Naomi knows what she witnessed, even as a sinister presence within the house begins disturbing her nights. Seeking answers, she visits her late grandmother Miriam’s cottage in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge and discovers a journal describing openings into a realm of Darkness. Meanwhile, Sergeant Elliot Pierce suspects a spiritual danger beyond anything his colleagues can explain. Naomi’s search for William draws her toward a confrontation with something that seems to know her most private fears.
Threshold of Darkness by Christen Ballard is a fabulous Christian supernatural novel, bringing the unseen world home. The characters are good company, with Elliot’s patience toward Naomi being particularly sweet. When she storms inside after they disagree, he stays on the porch, ready to talk whenever she is. He's a guy who really knows how to give someone space. The author is fantastic at creating an eerie atmosphere, too, turning what are normally everyday settings into places where something unsettling seems just around the corner. Elliot’s café conversation with fellow officer James Kerrigan is a perfect example, as the sergeant’s growing unease about a man’s research gives the exchange a decidedly ominous air. Scripture fits beautifully into the supernatural world, giving every encounter with Darkness a spiritual dimension. Christian supernatural fiction fans absolutely need this one on their reading list.
