Gratitude and a willingness to help others are valuable qualities that children can carry with them throughout their lives. In Ellie Harlow and the Last Sheaf, A.V. Harlow gives young readers a wonderful example of the harmony that can come from putting these qualities into practice. The day before Thanksgiving, Ellie and Greta go to the museum. Ellie stops to look at one painting in particular: The Harvesters by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. But she notices something is missing from the picture. Later, she and Greta find themselves inside the painting. There they meet Janneke, a girl who explains that it is the last day of the harvest and that by sunset the entire field must be reaped. Every year they tie a sheaf and place it in a special area. But that sheaf has disappeared, so they need to find it, and besides, it looks like a storm is coming, so if the work isn't finished on time, the grain left in the field will be ruined. So they have two difficult problems to solve that day.

A.V. Harlow shares a wonderful story that offers many things. It teaches children to appreciate art and better understand concepts such as cooperation and gratitude. I loved Ellie because she’s a helpful and observant girl who pays attention to small details when looking for clues, and she’s also a great example of determination. For example, when it's time to help, some people mention that she's never held a sickle before, but she replies that this is the time to learn, and when the others see her working, they all come to help. No one gives orders; everyone looks for ways to help. Ellie Harlow and the Last Sheaf demonstrates the value of hard work and teamwork.
