A Bargain of Blood and Gold is a work of paranormal romance and mystery adventure which was penned by Kristin Jacques. The work is best suited to the adult reading audience due to scenes of violence and gore. In this enjoyable fantasy tale with LGBTQ+ representation, we meet Johnathan Newman as he hunts down a vampire connected to a series of murders in Cress Haven. Johnathan is teamed up with Vic, a charming bachelor with darkly hidden secrets that are sure to come to light. As the pair clash and deadly dealings are revealed, can Johnathan battle his powerful desire for the very being he has been assigned to destroy?
Author Kristin Jacques has crafted an absolutely masterful work of paranormal romance that brings much-needed queer representation to the genre and does it with style and panache. I adored both Johnathan and Vic as central protagonists: two halves of a very dangerous coin that could flip them both into salvation or damnation at any moment. The romance itself is fiery, forbidden, and compelling, with some killer dialogue and gorgeously described scene work. Beyond this, the wider plot and the peril of what’s at stake between different supernatural realms is also high-stakes action and very exciting, with the two major plot strands linking up in enjoyable and satisfying ways throughout the novel without one ever overshadowing the other. Overall, I loved every moment of A Bargain of Blood and Gold and I definitely want to see more from this talented author.
