Bernadette Gage’s A Beautiful Sunrise begins in rural Ipole, Nigeria. Young Abi attends school because her father, Pa Okoh, refuses to accept the customs that reserve education for boys. His decision sends her away from home while she is still a child, places her in mission schools, and continues to shape her life after his death. When her marriage to Ijachi begins to focus on the demand for a male heir, Abi turns again to the education her father ensured for her. Step by step, she uses study, paid work, and her own judgment to secure a different future for herself and her children. Following Abi from village girlhood to academic life, this biography shows how one act of defiance in a small community alters the course of a woman’s life across family, work, motherhood, and public standing.

In Bernadette Gage’s A Beautiful Sunrise, Abi’s life is presented as a lasting record of scholarship and public service. Today’s readers will be able to appreciate Abi's contributions, from building the Never Too Late literacy initiative for adult women in Ipole to her conference address, where she speaks publicly on child marriage and women’s education. The biography reads in a novel format, which is more engaging and easier for readers to immerse themselves in. The writing style itself is direct and straightforward, and Gage moves with ease through Abi's spoken memory and in preserving detail. Readers of inspirational biographies will welcome this book, but the real boon as a legacy piece will be Abi’s family, who will no doubt treasure this piece of family history for generations to come.
