A Cage for the Wind by Dave Matthes is the story of an unstable aspiring writer trapped by the demons of his mind. Through a mesmerizing blend of prose and poetic verses, the book follows the life of Jerry, a self-confessed liar prone to delusions and plagued by the memories of his long-deceased mother. The story opens with Jerry thinking about how his marriage fell apart and how his wife cheated on him repeatedly until he couldn't take it. In the office, Jerry's boss has made his life a living hell, so of course, the most logical thing to do would be to kill him. Now on the road with his uncaring cat Grimace, Jerry takes readers on a journey through his past, from old lovers to unreliable friends who supply him with unknown drugs.

A wild rollercoaster of a ride in which you have no idea of where you're going, A Cage for the Wind will entice readers who enjoy unconventional narratives and uniquely told stories. Author Dave Matthes drops you in the midst of the action from the get-go and, with a combination of poetry and prose, takes you on an unpredictable journey that is surprisingly entertaining to read. The narrative is unflinchingly raw and unapologetic. You find yourself hooked to the pages as you try to understand the mechanics of Jerry's brain. The use of droll humor sprinkled throughout the pages makes for plenty of laugh-out-loud scenes. If you're looking for something surreal and filled with dark humor, A Cage for the Wind is the book for you.
