In A Colourful Garden by Ophelia Bard, we are introduced to a young carrot who just feels out of place in her home. Everyone around her is a beautiful rich green while she is a bright orange that stands out. All she wants is to fit in and the fact that she can’t makes her sad. That was until she took a walk through the garden and got the biggest surprise she could ever imagine. Beyond the section she calls home, she finds plants of many colors. Meeting the herbs, Carrot sees that the chives have beautiful purple flowers as does lavender. From there she sees the gorgeous red tomatoes who don’t really belong. They aren’t by the vegetables, but they aren’t by the fruits either. Instead, they are in between. After meeting the tomatoes, she comes across the fruit trees which have so many lovely colors.
I thought A Colourful Garden: A Story About Diversity, Acceptance and Friendship was such a sweet and adorable read that gives a very important message to young readers. Just because you are different doesn’t make you any less important. Sometimes it’s okay to stand out like a little carrot. By the time Carrot is done with her stroll, she realizes that she’s not so odd after all and that she should appreciate the beautiful hue of orange that she is. The illustrations by Maria Kuchynskaya are so beautiful and fit perfectly with the storyline. Children will love both the story and looking at the pictures. I think Ophelia Bard has done a wonderful job with this book and I can’t wait to read more of her work.
