Volume Two of Demon’s Quest: The Beginning of the End by Charles Carfagno Jr. picks up where the first book leaves off with Jacko and his new friends rescuing the women from the besieged town. Jacko and his friends recruit some help to return and rescue the rest of the town held captive by the evil forces of the Red Knight. Meanwhile, while on his way to Mirken, Tohran gets lost in a forest until he is detained by Lord Sim, who reads his note, and then helps him regain his memory. From there the story goes back and forth between Jacko’s and Tohran’s adventures. The cast of characters that get involved with our two heroes grows as fast as the body count. As they are manipulated from quest to quest, revelations about the leaders of the towns begin to unfold. Everybody wants something, and a little leverage goes a long way, especially when demons are involved.
Once again Mr. Carfagno does a superb job of describing the fast paced action, with all of the twists in the plots that keep readers on the edge of their seats. His characters’ personalities, flaws, and strengths are real. From demon lords who call our plane of existence the 'other,' to boisterous serving wenches, to the simple shop keeper selling supplies. The author's writing style is detailed, imaginative, and powerful. Even when things get bleak, and the timing is right, he lets his characters reveal their sense of humor. Volume two of Demon’s Quest; The Beginning of the End is a must-read for fantasy lovers, as well as D&D enthusiasts. I am left hanging for the next installment to be dangled in front of me. Brava!
