Eight-year-old Cora Everstone is a happy, kindhearted child with loving parents but plagued by mysterious and strange dreams. Her parents seek help from Arch Magister Astrael Ashmane, who suggests that Cora enroll at The Magister's School for the Gilded Highborn so she can learn to control her gift of visions before they overwhelm and possibly harm her. Excited, Cora's having a great time making new friends and learning invaluable lessons about their world and magic. Unfortunately, her visions are getting stronger and more frequent, prompting Astrael to speed up Cora's learning for her own safety－a decision that comes with great challenges. A Flower Among The Gold is the first volume of the Realms of Erdaris Series by Michael Patrick.
Endearing protagonist Cora is easily likable as she and her parents arrive in the Golden Realm to join a school for the gifted, spurred by her troublesome visions. The story leans slightly towards a character-driven plot as Cora receives friendship and kindness from the students and several elite elves. However, not everybody is welcoming and perseverance is definitely a visible theme for young readers as Cora braves the harsh treatments with the help of her headstrong elf friend Tamyn Starborne, the wise and sympathetic Arch Magister Ashmane, and her loving parents. The story pace is enhanced by its direct writing style, conveying different moods well, moving the story along without too many embellishments. A Flower Among The Gold is an intriguing coming-of-age fantasy novel that emphasizes personal transformation, a solid first tale for Michael Patrick's Realms of Erdaris Series.
