Sometimes children may feel intimidated when they are in the public eye, such as by discussing a topic in a class or even playing with a group of friends. That is why children need to participate in activities and gain experience to reduce that anxiety. Patricia Pedraza-Nafziger and Wendy Leach allow us to explore this with A Golf Ball in Her Shoe. Birdie is a girl who likes to play golf and is good at the sport, but she gets nervous when she is with other people. Chip, an adorable dog, is a friend who supports her. One day Chip is no longer able to accompany her and Birdie must look for a solution to be able to cope and share more moments on the golf course.

A Golf Ball in Her Shoe covers several topics that I thought were important. From Birdie, children will learn to express themselves freely and overcome fears and obstacles. Chip the loving dog loses the ability to run, but that is only a temporary obstacle because Birdie shows that, in many cases, a disability can be overcome. I enjoyed seeing the love and harmony between these two characters. Pets promote a feeling of companionship and security which can help children face their fears and insecurities. In addition, pets improve people's moods and bring happiness. Patricia Pedraza-Nafziger and Wendy Leach use this story to combine many interesting aspects of the relationship between children with their pets. This book is ideal to teach lessons on empathy and self-improvement to young readers.
