A Hand Truck Named Dolly by Kay Whitehouse has been written for children aged from five to eight years. The blue hand truck has been waiting for ages in a garden centre to be bought. When she is, it’s by a family of five who also have a boisterous puppy called Bear. Brooke, the mom, calls her Dolly, and uses her to move all sorts of things, and not only in the garden, which means Dolly becomes “part of the family”: a typical family children will recognise and understand easily. Mischievous, naughty Bear is her only problem. Will she survive his rough treatment or be broken?

Kay Whitehouse has written a marvellous book for children in A Hand Truck Named Dolly. It is divided into short chapters, perfect for children to read at one sitting, and each shows a different side of family life. The first, which introduces the hand truck, shows a vivid picture of a garden centre, amusing due to the harmless antics of a bee. Hello Dolly follows, revealing Dolly’s character, but in the next she meets the puppy called Bear, who threatens her happy life in her new home. Several activities are introduced: family time, baseball and dog training. The real surprise comes after the story ends; four puzzles - Fill in the Blanks, a Crossword, Word Scramble, and Word Search - are provided that link back to the stories. They lead on to factual articles on baseball and dog training, both of which could be read by Ms Whitehouse’s target audience. Great fun, educational, and highly recommended.
