The search for a new place to live can be tricky until you find just the right space that calls to you and feels just right. That’s exactly how the title character feels in A Home for Toad by Allison M. Webb. It begins with a small toad slipping through a fence into a quiet backyard in search of a spot to settle down. He moves around the yard and starts exploring different areas. He tries a leafy garden, a sunny patch of grass, and a cozy nook near a house, but discovers a surprise at each one that makes them not quite right. Will Toad ever find the perfect place to call home, or does he need to go somewhere else?

A Home for Toad by Allison M. Webb will keep young readers captivated and make them wonder. As an educator, I’m sure it will spark classroom discussions about habitats, feelings of safety, and what makes a place feel like “home.” This story could also be extended with activities like a house hunt for Toad outside or even in a classroom, or students could draw a house for the tiny toad. The illustrations by the author are beautiful and look like a mix of oil pastels and paint or watercolor, with rich colors and very detailed plants, toys, and little corners of the yard that kids will love studying up close. Adults and young readers who enjoy nature-focused stories and gentle backyard adventures will definitely want to add this cozy, engaging read to their school or home library.
