Did you know that Diwali is also known as the Festival of Lights? It's celebrated the world over by people of South Asian ancestry and signifies the victory of light over darkness. Learn a few interesting facts about Diwali and its origins with this colorful picture book by Chhavi Arya Bhargava. In A Kids' Book About Diwali, Chhavi begins by sharing her own experiences as a young child in school, where not many people were aware of what Diwali was. Each Diwali, her mom would give her special sweets to share with teachers and friends. In North India, Diwali draws its significance from the mythology of the Ramayana, while in the South, it honors the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. Chhavi also explains each of the five days of the festival.

Diwali is one of the major festivals for many South Asian communities, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and even some Buddhists. As the West becomes more multicultural, books like A Kids' Book About Diwali foster understanding and connection among diverse communities. Chhavi Arya Bhargava has a writing style that is kid-friendly, educational, and entertaining. The author has an engaging way of presenting context and information, ensuring children remain captivated with her lively storytelling from beginning to end. My favorite part of the book was definitely the retelling of the epic of Ramayana in a concise manner that I'm sure young readers will appreciate. I also found the facts about the five-day celebration of Diwali fascinating. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and heartily recommend parents read it together with their children.
