A Mouse and Two Cows Lived in a Yellow House by Alex Dabrotta tells the story of unlikely neighbors who share a yellow house surrounded by sunflowers, next to a wheat field. A mouse lives quietly in the basement, while two cows occupy the ground floor. Though they’ve lived in the same house for ages without even knowing it, their paths have never crossed until one day, when the postman brings a package for Mrs. Cow that Mr. Mouse mistakes as his own. What will happen when their worlds suddenly collide, and they are face-to-face for the first time? Will the mix-up cause chaos, or will it bring something unexpectedly heartwarming? Readers are invited to turn the pages and discover how a simple misunderstanding can lead to something much bigger in this tale of curiosity, surprise, and connection.
Alex Dabrotta’s story moved me with its warm narrative and gentle pace. The use of light rhymes and repetition makes it the perfect read-aloud story. The plot develops smoothly, with a balance of humor and heart that keeps young readers entertained. The illustrations are bright, expressive, and full of playful details, enhancing the cozy tone of the story. The author conveys a timeless message about community and empathy in a way that feels both simple and sincere. Much like A Squash and a Squeeze by Julia Donaldson or Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin, A Mouse and Two Cows Lived in a Yellow House offers a delightful mix of imagination and meaning—all wrapped in a story about how even the smallest connections can create lasting friendships.
