“A Murder on Mardi Gras” by Jake Jasper is a fast-paced ride through the underworld of New Orleans. Jake Jasper, a fallen alcoholic writer, attempts to restore his former glory by writing an article about Mardi Gras. On assignment, he enlists the services of his friend, Marco, a street-smart New Orleanian. They visit the cemetery to gain protection from Marie, a former voodoo queen. Later, Jake meets Minette, an attractive journalism major and witness of the death of Cotty, an elderly, escape resident of the psychiatric hospital. Jake and Marco become murder suspects on the run. But who would want to kill an innocent old man? Is this murder connected to the slain cab driver? Are both murders connected to the terroristic plot of a Middle Eastern fundamentalist group planning to blow up the city?
This story had to take place in the Big Easy during Mardi Gras. The setting provided the ideal backdrop for an evil plot unfolding in the midst of revelers, masks and rituals steeped in tradition. The cast of colorful characters added a richness and a wicked sense of humour. I liked Jake, a brilliant writer with deep issues strangling his talent. It is the quintessential struggle of man against himself. I underestimated Marco - he had skills they don’t teach you in school. Jasper is an excellent writer. His words sparked vivid visual scenes and the dialogue was real. “A murder on Mardi Gras” is highly recommended.
