A Night So Dark and Full of Stars: Twelve Tales Inspired by the Zodiac by Nikky Lee puts together original stories that all harken back to specific astronomical constellations. In Seamare (Pisces), Captain Sanders finds himself trapped in his sinking ship and has a terrifying encounter with a mermaid-like creature that leads to a horrible realization. In Karkinos (Cancer), Roy Quinn discovers a mechanical heart linked to the souls of the lost and looks to become a Karkinoi to reunite with his deceased wife. Nunki’s Arrows (Sagittarius) follows Nunki, a godling without divine gifts, who trains human assassins. After a tragic event that brings his family full circle, Nunki must reconcile the repercussions of his skillset. Each story, aligned with its zodiac sign, reads independently of the others.

Nikky Lee’s A Night So Dark and Full of Stars is a wonderfully unique collection that creatively mixes astrology with dark fantasy. The writing is rich and descriptive. I love the premise and felt the connection between the sign and the story. Although some require a little more consideration to get there, getting there is half the fun. Most of the stories are quite substantial in length, but all pack a huge punch. My favorite is The Secrets She Eats, where Josie Fisher, a woman who feeds on secrets, is pushed toward dark magic while investigating a criminal involved in an illicit trade. It's disturbing and, at the same time, satisfying, with a tightrope act between someone's nature and moral ambiguity. Overall, Lee gives readers an imaginative and engaging collection that kept me hooked to the end. Very highly recommended.
