Cali is the niece of the king. Her father wants her to take over the mage school when he retires and marry a man of his choosing. However, Cali is not interested in either. One day she meets Galadin, a sea captain. She asks him to train her in hunting and fighting, and he agrees. When her father finds out he is furious and imprisons Cali in a locked room. When she gets out she runs away to Galadin's ship and stows away. Cali and Galadin marry and have a short time together before he is lost at sea. Then Cali finds out she is pregnant and Jayden, who has loved her from afar, asks her to marry him. Cali still longs for her lost husband and names her daughter Mollie as Galadin wished. Cali did not want the life her father was trying to force on her. She wanted to marry for love and not because of an arrangement. Galadin had been a pirate but left that life when the men he was with took innocent lives. He was not sure about a relationship with Cali because she is of royal blood. However, after he was hurt and Cali cared for him, he let down his resolve.
This is a delightful story with engaging characters. This book has it all: romance, adventure, suspense and action. Cali is a strong character who searches to find herself. This is the kind of book I like to curl up with on a cold winter day.
